Turn the water off at the stopcock
It's usually under the kitchen sink, in a utility room or under the stairs. Turn it clockwise.

Open the cold taps
This drains the pipes faster and takes the pressure off the leak.

Keep clear of wet electrics
If water is near sockets or light fittings, switch the power off at the consumer unit and don't touch anything wet.
