Spring Plumbing & Heating Checklist for Wirral Homes

After a long, damp Wirral winter, spring is the perfect time to give your home's plumbing and heating a once-over. A few simple checks now will catch small problems before they turn into expensive emergencies — and get your home ready for the warmer months ahead. Here is the checklist we recommend to our customers every year.

Book Your Boiler Service Early

The single best thing you can do in spring is book your annual boiler service. Most people leave it until autumn, which means long waits and rushed appointments just as the cold weather arrives. In spring and summer our diary is quieter, so you will get a slot quickly and your boiler will be ready well before you need it.

A yearly service also keeps your manufacturer's warranty valid and helps your boiler run efficiently. You can read more on our boiler services and gas safety page, or book online in a couple of minutes.

Check Your Outside Taps for Frost Damage

Winter frost is hard on outdoor pipework. Now is the time to turn your outside tap on and check it works properly before you need it for the garden. Look for:

  • Drips or weeping from the tap or the pipe behind it
  • Damp patches on the wall where the pipe passes through
  • Low or no flow, which can point to a split pipe further back

If you spot any of these, get it looked at before summer — a small leak behind a wall can cause real damage over time.

Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators were slow to warm up or had cold patches at the top over winter, there is trapped air in the system. Bleeding them clears the air so the system runs efficiently. Our guide on how to bleed a radiator walks you through it step by step. If radiators are cold at the bottom rather than the top, that points to sludge and may need a power flush instead.

Hunt for Hidden Leaks

Spring is a good time to check the spots you usually ignore. Look under sinks, behind the toilet and around the boiler for any signs of damp, staining or that musty smell. It is also worth checking your water meter last thing at night and first thing in the morning — if the reading has moved and no one has used water, you may have a hidden leak.

Test Your Water Pressure

Take note of the pressure at your taps and shower. If it has dropped over the winter, there are several possible causes, from a partially closed valve to a more serious supply issue. Our article on low water pressure causes and fixes covers the most common culprits.

Clear Gutters, Gullies and Drains

The wet Wirral winter leaves leaves and debris in gutters and outside gullies. Clearing them now prevents overflows and blocked drains during spring showers. While you are out there, check that outside drains run freely — slow drainage is an early warning sign of a blockage building up.

Plan Summer Projects Now

Warmer, drier months are the ideal time for bigger jobs. If you are thinking about a new bathroom or a new boiler, getting your quote in spring means you can book the work for summer and avoid the autumn rush.
